Hayden Hall heard about AzBrainfood from seeing a story about us on Channel 12 News. He felt bad for those kids who go home on the weekends and do not have food to eat. He decided that for part of his Bar Mitzvah that he would collect food and money donations for AzBrainfood to help these kids.

Just in time for the first day of Brainfood this fall, a truckload of food that Hayden had collected showed up at our warehouse! Way to go Hayden! Thanks to his friends and family for their help also!

Two years ago, (Ruth Collins) started the non-profit Arizona Brainfood, whose volunteers partner with Bashas’ grocery stores and Mesa Public Schools during the school year.

The volunteers spend Fridays stuffing hundreds of backpacks with food so disadvantaged children in Mesa schools can have something to eat over the weekend.

They started feeding 200 elementary-school children at two schools. Last school year, they helped some 600 at 17 Mesa Public Schools.

And they hope to feed even more in the coming school year, which begins Aug. 10.

Bob Evans, director of Mesa United Way food bank, said there now is the greatest demand for food since he took the helm 15 years ago.

“I’m just so grateful there’s help out there,” Alvarez said.

- That $5 a week can change a child’s life.

- That one person can make a difference when they see a need and act.

- That there are so many people who want to help, but that they need to be made aware of organizations in which they can become involved.

- That you don’t need to have a college degree to better others’ circumstances.

- That service is contagious and good for the soul.

Monday through Friday, thousands of Mesa students receive a meal at school through the federally funded free and reduced-price lunch program.

On the weekends, some of those children don’t have food to eat.

A nonprofit organization – AZ Brainfood – is trying to change that. On Friday, the group celebrated its move into a new facility donated by the district it’s trying to help.

AZ Brainfood’s all-volunteer staff now operates in the gymnasium at the former McKellips Middle School site at 325 E. McKellips Road. The Mesa Unified School District closed that school when it made districtwide changes to address enrollment and budget cuts earlier this year…
